Chapter Nine

Mike hoisted Ethan up onto his shoulders and ran to his truck with Ethan laughing the entire way. Sara followed behind, nervously shaking her head.

"Please be careful!” she called out. “That's precious cargo you've got riding on your shoulders!"

No doubt just to be a smart-ass, Mike spun around and ran backwards. Ethan laughed even harder. Sara started chewing on her thumbnail. If he doesn't slow down, she thought, he's going to be wearing the huge ice cream cone Ethan just consumed.

But they managed to make it to the truck without incident, and Mike even had Ethan buckled in by the time Sara caught up to them. He held the door open for her and grinned.

"If you're jealous, I can give you a ride on my shoulders too. Except I'd like you facing the opposite way."

As understanding dawned, her cheeks flamed. She motioned toward Ethan and whispered, “Mike, you have to watch what you say."

"Come on, he's seven. What could he know?” He shut her door and headed around to the driver's side.

"More than you could imagine,” she replied as he slid behind the wheel.

Both turned to look at the little person seated between them.

"I know if she's facing the other way, you won't be able to see where you're going."

Mike's face turned beet-red, and Sara bit the inside of her cheek to hold back a laugh.

He stuck the key in the ignition and said, “I was thinking, since it's still so early, how would you two like to go check out some bunk beds?"

"Yeah! Can we, Mom?"

"I suppose. We can check out some different bedroom and living room sets while we're there. That's a big house you bought. You'll be amazed by how much furniture it's going to take to fill it. If I remember correctly, it's four bedrooms, right?"

Mike turned the key and the truck roared to life. “Yep. With a dining room, rec room and full basement."

He looks happy and sounds eager, she thought. Like he can't wait to get started with his new life. She wondered about his life back in Chicago. She already knew he didn't have anyone special waiting for him; he'd made that clear the other night. But had he been seeing someone recently? Had he broken some woman's heart before heading back to Green Bay?

A twinge of jealousy tightened her chest and she realized she didn't like the thought of Mike with anyone else. If life had worked out the way it was supposed to, they'd have gotten married right after she'd found out she was pregnant, and they'd be celebrating their eighth wedding anniversary this year. They'd feel comfortable and completely at ease with each other instead of awkward and unsure.

But that undeniable ... something that had drawn them together in the first place was still there. Chemistry, she supposed. She felt it every time Mike looked at her—like he wanted to devour her. And she couldn't deny, at least to herself, that she felt the same, though she hated being so susceptible to him.
